Treatment of dental caries

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems. Early treatment helps prevent it from progressing and causing further damage to the tooth. At Mediestetik clinics, we provide diagnosis and treatment of tooth decay with an emphasis on a gentle approach and preserving healthy tooth structure. The most suitable treatment is always selected individually according to the extent of the decay and the condition of the tooth.

You can book an appointment at our dental clinics in Prague 1, Prague 2 – Vinohrady and Teplice.

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay is a disease affecting the hard tissues of the tooth. It develops as a result of bacteria in dental plaque, which produce acids that gradually damage the tooth enamel and, as the decay progresses, the deeper layers of the tooth.

In its early stages, tooth decay may not cause any noticeable symptoms. As it progresses, however, it can damage the dentine, lead to the formation of a cavity and eventually affect the dental pulp. This is why early detection and treatment are important.

How can you recognise tooth decay?

Tooth decay may initially develop without pain and is therefore often detected during a routine dental check-up. Over time, symptoms may include:

  • increased sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks,
  • toothache,
  • dark or white spots on the surface of the tooth,
  • visible damage or a cavity in the tooth.

Regular preventive check-ups can help detect changes at an early stage, before more extensive damage develops.

How is tooth decay treated?

The treatment method depends primarily on the extent and location of the decay. In some cases, early carious lesions can be treated using gentle methods without conventional drilling. At Mediestetik, we use, for example, the ICON® method, which is designed for selected early enamel lesions.

For more advanced tooth decay, the damaged tooth tissue usually needs to be removed and the resulting cavity treated with a suitable filling. The dentist then adjusts the filling to respect the natural shape of the tooth and ensure a proper bite.

The specific treatment approach is always selected by the dentist according to the extent of the damage and the condition of the tooth, with the aim of preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.

Why is it important to treat tooth decay early?

Early detection of tooth decay may allow for simpler and gentler treatment. Untreated decay, on the other hand, can gradually spread into the deeper layers of the tooth and cause pain or other dental complications.

More extensive damage may require root canal treatment or other procedures. Regular preventive care and timely treatment therefore help preserve your natural teeth in good condition for as long as possible.

Do you think you may have tooth decay?

If you are experiencing toothache or increased sensitivity, or if you have noticed a change in the appearance of a tooth, book a dental examination. Our dentist will assess the condition of your teeth and recommend a suitable treatment.

Question: Hello, how do you treat dental carries at your clinic?

Answer: Emerging and surface dental caries in tooth enamel can be treated non-invasively by the ICON® method, based on the principle of re-mineralization of the tooth enamel by application of various pastes rich in fluoride, resulting in the strengthening of the integrity of the tooth. If the caries already penetrated the dentin, this method will no longer help. In such cases it is necessary to drill the caries out and fill the chamber with a composite or ceramic dental filling.

Question: Hello, I wonder why the dental carries develop. Can you tell me? Thank you for your answer.

Answer: Dental caries development is fueled by improper dental hygiene. It is a breakdown of hard tissue of the tooth due to activities of bacteria on the food debris or sugar left on the tooth surface after eating. Such bacteria produce acids and such acids cause demineralization of the tooth enamel, which is how caries develops. At first, the damage of the tooth is mild, as the caries develops and proceeds in dentin, the problems become more serious. If not treated in time, caries can cause the loss of the tooth and the development of periodontal disease.
