Orthodontists and orthodontic treatment

Orthodontic treatment is diagnosed for patients with an unbalanced bite, which can be either a medical or purely aesthetic problem. The most effective resolution for these inequalities can be achieved with the assistance of braces.  External steel fixed braces are the most widely used method of orthodontic treatment, there is also the option of ceramic brackets which can provide greater aesthetics. Also "Incognito" braces which are placed on the inner side of the teeth or special invisible braces, Invisalign,  made from transparent foil.

What are fixed braces?

Classic external fixed braces are made of steel or ceramic brackets and a thin bonding wire. The brackets are firmly attached to the outside of the teeth and wire is gradually tightened to produce the desired form of an aligned dental arc.

What are the Invisalign braces?

Invisalign are a special kind of dental braces that are very different from classic braces with fixed brackets. Invisalign or invisible braces are a special set of transparent foil aligners that are custom made for each patient in the lab after imprinting or digital scanning of the teeth. Invisalign braces are not firmly attached to the teeth, therefore, can be easily removed before consuming food and placed back after eating.

The rule, however, is that the Invisalign braces must be worn at least 22-23 hours a day. The advantage is also the fact that it is custom made, hence fewer visits to the orthodontist are required.

Why choose Invisalign aligners?

Invisalign foil aligners do not contain any metal clamps, joints, or wires. A beautiful smile can be achieved with minimal interference with your everyday life. Most people around you will not even notice that you are wearing any braces.

It is a 100% fully individual treatment. Each patient has several sets of completely individual transparent aligners which are, according to orthodontist's guidelines, changed regularly after two weeks.  Every other aligner is made in a slightly different shape, and each time it moves the tooth by half a millimetre. The speed of alignment is therefore similar to that of classic bracket braces.

These invisible braces are removable, allowing the patient to feel comfortable while brushing teeth, eating or receiving dental care.

Attaining the desired outcome of the treatment depends very much on the discipline of the patient. Brace removal time should not exceed two hours a day.

What problems do braces solve?

Among the most common problems that are solved by the placement of the braces are underbite, cross or open bite, misaligned and crooked teeth or various defects of jaws.

How long do I have to have braces attached?

Orthodontic treatment is individual and varies from case to case, most of the time, however, the patient has braces for one to two years.

What to be aware of?

For the classically fixed braces or incognito braces treatment, the dental hygiene of the oral cavity is absolute key. Due to the brackets the teeth are difficult to access, thus a lot of attention needs to be paid to regular and careful teeth cleaning and a patient has to pay more frequent visits to a professional for dental hygiene. For Invisalign braces, it is important to remember that the braces have to be worn at least 22 - 23 hours a day.

Question: Can braces be also worn by adults, not just children?

Answer: Of course. The orthodontic treatment is not limited by age; we have patients from young age all the way to the 50 years old.

Question: What’s the difference between the classical braces, the invisible ones and the foil ones?

Answer: Traditional fixed outer braces consist of small metal brackets and a thin connective wire. The brackets are fixed on the outer side of the teeth and are slowly being pulled together through various stages of straightening into a nice and healthy dental arch. Unlike the traditional braces, the invisible ones are fixed on the inner side of the teeth, which makes them invisible at the first sight. A special type of braces is the foil ones (also called removable). In this case, several individual sets of transparent foils are made for each patient based on the computer modelling, which they systematically change according to the treatment plan.
