Nose plastic surgery: Rhinoplasty

The nose is the centre of the face - to a large extent it determines how others perceive our appearance and, above all, how we perceive ourselves. If the shape and size of the nose disrupt the facial aesthetics or even cause functional problems, plastic surgery comes into consideration. How does rhinoplasty take place at the Mediestetik clinic?

What is rhinoplasty?

It is one of the most challenging plastic surgery treatments in general. The reason is not only aesthetics, functionality, but mainly psyche and self-confidence. However, due to significant positive changes, rhinoplasty is one of the most widespread plastic surgeries in recent years.

For who is the procedure suitable?

The rhinoplasty is suitable for patients with congenital or (trauma) deviations in the size and shape of the nose. Surgery can be performed at the earliest after the cranial bones and cartilage fuse together, i.e. after the end of puberty. The upper age limit of the operation is not directly determined. The main criterion is a medical condition that allows surgery under general anaesthesia and does not increase the risk of poor healing of the nose associated with deformation.

What is the process before surgery?

Before each surgery, we initiate intensive communication between the patient and the doctor. In rhinoplasty, more than ever, the experience of the physician, the sense of aesthetics, the perception of the possibilities of the treated tissue, and the attitude and mental state of the patient must combine into one harmonious whole. After the consultation, a pre-operative examination (blood analysis, ECG, an examination by a general practitioner) follows.

How does the procedure take place?

The rhinoplasty itself is performed under general anaesthesia and lasts about 1-2 hours. Under local anaesthesia, the surgeon can make only minor corrections, mainly tip of the nose. Plastic surgery performs external nose adjustments. We can combine rhinoplasty with the modification of the nasal septum (septoplasty) - this combination is called septorhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is performed internally - through the nostrils so that there are no visible external scars. There is also an open rhinoplasty designed to correct more serious nose defects. The patient will have a tiny skin scar at the nasal septum. After the procedure, the patient will receive a splint for protection and support, wearing it 14 - 21 days.

The patient is released into home care the day after surgery. The main unpleasant factor for the patient immediately after the procedure is the need to breathe through the mouth. For the successful outcome of the surgery, the patient should follow the regimen and care provided by the physician. Healing after rhinoplasty is very individual. In addition to the aesthetic effect, the plastic surgeon's intervention can also improve the functional state of the nose - thus making breathing easier.
